CUMBERLAND — Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy (BVP) conducted its annual lottery for the 2021-22 school year Thursday, April 1, randomly selecting 224 scholars for kindergarten admission and randomly generating a waitlist for additional seats that may become available in grades K-12. BVP received 1,859 applications for the 2021-22 school year.
Under the terms of BVP’s charter with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE), BVP’s enrollment is capped, forcing approximately eight out of every 10 applicants to be waitlisted annually. The 2021-22 waitlist also includes over one hundred siblings of current BVP scholars.
“We continue to be humbled by the incredible demand for BVP’s program,” said Jeremy Chiappetta, chief executive officer. “Charter schools provide a valuable school choice option for families, and we’re excited to welcome hundreds of new students into our schools for what we truly believe will be a rewarding experience.”
BVP joined efforts with RIDE and other charter schools across the state to participate in a unified application system for the 2021-22 school year. Launched by RIDE, EnrollRI allows families to discover, compare, and apply to participating charter schools in one centralized location. It ensures that access to RIDE schools and programs remains easy, safe, and accessible for all families. As always, enrollment in a public charter school is nonselective and conducted by random lottery.
