THREE BVPHS SENIORS AWARDED QUESTBRIDGE NATIONAL COLLEGE MATCH SCHOLARSHIPS

THREE BLACKSTONE VALLEY PREP HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AWARDED COVETED QUESTBRIDGE NATIONAL COLLEGE MATCH SCHOLARSHIPS

CUMBERLAND — With incredible enthusiasm, Blackstone Valley Prep High School (BVPHS) is pleased to announce seniors Alexis Flores and Dayana Sancibier of Central Falls and Samantha Munera-Goez of Cumberland have been awarded full, four-year college scholarships and admission to Boston University, Wesleyan University, and Columbia University, respectively, through the highly competitive QuestBridge National College Match Program. All three are future first-generation college students.

Founded in 1994, QuestBridge is a national nonprofit based in Palo Alto, California that connects the nation’s most exceptional, low-income youth with leading colleges and opportunities. By working with these students — beginning in high school through college to their first job — QuestBridge aims to increase the percentage of talented low-income students attending the nation’s best colleges and to support them to achieve success in their careers and communities. In 2021, out of over 16,500 applications nationwide, 6,312 students were selected as National College Match Finalists, and only 1,674 matched with a college or university.

Alexis is a member of Blackstone Valley Prep’s inaugural kindergarten class (more on that below) and plans to study political science at Boston University. Dayana has attended BVP since 9th grade and plans to study biomedical engineering and dance at Wesleyan University. Samantha has attended BVP since 2nd grade. She looks forward to studying neuroscience and behavior with a concentration in public health at Columbia University.

“The QuestBridge application is challenging, but these three scholars are the epitome of discipline. Alexis is a remarkable leader, and his empathy and drive will take him far. Dayana is incredibly talented, both academically and in the arts, and I have no doubt she’ll do amazing things at Wesleyan and beyond. Samantha is responsible, focused, and determined, and her intellectual curiosity will propel her to great success in the Big Apple,” says David Jose, director of college and careers. “We’re immensely grateful to QuestBridge and their College Partners for providing them this opportunity.”

Blackstone Valley Prep was founded in 2009 with the goal of proving what is possible for public education in Rhode Island. It started with a staff of nine teachers and 76 kindergarteners, and has grown to serve 2,200 scholars in grades K-12 across six schools. That inaugural kindergarten class is set to graduate high school this spring. Graduation is set for Saturday, June 4, 2022, at noon.
